PROJECT OVERVIEW
Morris-Shea, an industry-leading deep foundation contractor, completed installation of 185 continuous flight auger (CFA) piles at the site of a new 27 story residential tower in Charlotte, North Carolina. The development will feature 238 apartment units, a multi-story parking facility and commercial space at the ground level. The project at 1200 Metropolitan Avenue also required the installation of specialty micropile anchors, rather than CFA piles, where subsurface rock was found at extremely shallow depths.
FOUNDATION SYSTEM INSTALLATION
Morris-Shea foundation professionals installed a total of 185 CFA piles with a high-powered, multifunctional Fundex F3500 drill rig. Installation of 24, 36, and 48 inch diameter piles varied in depths ranging from 6 to 70 feet due to bedrock elevation changes throughout the project. Four 24 inch diameter piles and nine 36 inch diameter CFA piles were removed from scope due to shallow rock encountered at the job site. Micropile anchors were designed to be tied to the rock subsurface, replacing these CFA piles.
