JORDAN-HARE STADIUM NORTH END ZONE VIDEOBOARD
Auburn, Alabama
MORRIS-SHEA PROJECT COMPONENTS
DRILLED SHAFTS – DEEP FOUNDATION
8 shafts – 61 inch diameter each
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Morris-Shea, a Birmingham-based deep foundation contractor, installed eight 61 inch diameter drilled shafts to depths ranging from 25 to 40 feet at Auburn University as foundation for the Jordan-Hare Stadium’s new videoboard. Six of the shafts were drilled using 61 inch temporary casings with an ID wall thickness of 0.5 inch. The final two shafts were installed with permament casings as required by the geotechnical engineer. The drilled shafts are positioned at a site previously used as a parking lot and in close enough proximity to the stadium to support the new videoboard.
PROJECT CONDITIONS
The Morris-Shea drilled shafts will support a new 47 x 154 feet videoboard at the stadium’s north end zone. Construction of the videoboard is expected to be completed in time for the Auburn Tigers 2025 season. The current football season’s Friday games required Morris-Shea to suspend work Thursday evenings and operate a 4 day work week. The job site’s restricted access and weak work platform necessitated the installation of specialty equipment mats to support the weight of the drill rig and crane. The space limitation also required that steel reinforcing cages be hand-tied on site.
