DOS BOCAS REFINERY PROJECT

CFA PILES:
■ Improved load capacity
■ Faster installation time
■ Reduced overall schedule
■ Vibration-free
■ Low noise

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Morris-Shea installed Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles for use as deep foundation for pipe racks at the new Dos Bocas Refinery in Paraíso, Mexico. The Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) facility will be the largest oil products refinery in the country.  Morris-Shea was awarded the Site 2 pile contract after the successful installation of deep foundations at the refinery’s Site 1 location. The CFA piles satisfy all foundation load requirements for pipe running up to a half mile in distance between storage tanks and/or processing plants. Morris-Shea’s Mexico team performed quality installations in jobsites congested with the ongoing activities, equipment and spoils of current and previous contractors.

DEEP FOUNDATION INSTALLATION
The Dos Bocas Refinery Project required the installation of 437 32 inch diameter and 193 1meter diameter Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles drilled to a depth of 100 feet. Morris-Shea’s Mexico team utilized 2 Fundex 3500 drill rigs with Onboard Automated Monitoring Systems to assure quality pile installation in varying subsurface soil and rock environments. The drilling often necessitated working in unstable soft and dangerous surface soil conditions. The pipe racks ranged in distance up to one half mile and required the movement of the drill rigs. Full length steel cages were fabricated at the jobsite and installed as reinforcement in the specialty cement mix..
